MIV: The museum that will reveal Vodun to the world<\/strong>

At the entrance to Porto-Novo, an impressive construction site has been taking shape since 2022: the International Museum of Vodun (MIV). As the world's first museum entirely dedicated to this spirituality, it's set to be one of the African continent's most anticipated cultural landmarks.  

Architecture that already tells a story<\/strong>

The building spans nearly one and a half hectares. Its six circular volumes, shaped like gourds, are inspired by Tata Somba\u2014traditional dwellings typical of northern Benin. Connected by a canopy, they will house a large reception building, a 150-seat auditorium, a temporary exhibition hall, and several permanent exhibition rooms.

A museum designed to deconstruct clich\u00e9s<\/strong>

The MIV's ambition goes far beyond just displaying objects. The museum aims to offer an immersion into the world of Vodun\u2014its deities, practices, and role in Beninese society\u2014to challenge the misconceptions that still too often surround it internationally. Ceremonial masks, costumes, musical instruments, sculptures, and ritual objects will be on display, alongside pieces on loan from foreign partners in Brazil, Cuba, and the United States, illustrating Vodun's ties to the diaspora across the Atlantic.

A place in the heart of the city<\/strong>

The museum is located right next to Place Toffa, where a statue of King Toffa, Porto-Novo's first historical figure, already welcomes visitors. This choice of location is significant: it anchors the future museum in the urban and historical landscape of Benin's capital, while marking the entrance to the city.

A project that's part of a larger dynamic<\/strong>

The MIV is just one piece of a vast cultural project led by Benin, alongside the Museum of the Kings and Amazons of Danxom\u00e8 in Abomey, the future International Museum of the Memory of Slavery in Ouidah, and the Route of Vodun Convents, which already connects Ouidah, Adjarra, Abomey, K\u00e9tou, and Grand-Popo. These initiatives make Benin's spiritual and cultural heritage a real driver for tourism.
